KENT, Conn.—Crossing the street just got a little friendlier—and a lot safer. The Kent Lions’ Club is initiating an effort to remind pedestrians that the best way to step off the curb with confidence isn’t just looking both ways, it’s waving.

“Pedestrian safety isn’t just about rules—it’s about connection,” said Lions member Karren Garrity. “A simple wave builds trust between drivers and walkers, reduces confusion, and helps everyone get home safely. Plus, it makes the world just a little friendlier.”

She advises, giving a cheerful wave to drivers before crossing not only does make sure they see you, but it also adds a dash of neighborly fun to an everyday habit. Think of it as saying, “Hey, you see me? Great. Thanks!”

Here’s her step-by-step guide to crossing like a pro.

1. Stop at the curb. Phones down, eyes up—look alive!

2. Look left, right, and left again. Double-check for cars, bikes or the occasional scooter.

3. Wave! Make eye contact with drivers and throw up a friendly wave. It’s your way of saying, “Let’s do this safely together.”

4. Wait for their wave back (or clear sign of stopping). That mutual nod or wave? It’s your green light.5. Walk, don’t run. Cross at a steady pace. Bonus points for smiling as you go
