TORRINGTON, Conn.—”Of the People, By the People, For the People,” A Movement Choir will be performed on the afternoon of Sunday, July 5, at Five Points Art Center in Torrington, as part of a celebratory afternoon for our nation’s 250th anniversary.

The movement choir is a communal project led by Kent choreographer/director Paula Josa-Jones. The project’s aim is to evoke the spirit of regeneration and community in the festive marking of our 250th anniversary as a nation.

The event is free, and guests are encouraged to RSVP.

It is an outdoor performance, rain or shine (there is an indoor space if there is inclement weather), and attendees should bring lawn chairs or blankets to sit on.

The afternoon festivities also include dancing, a food truck, and an art station where guests can share in the celebration of our nation’s 250th birthday. Collaborators in developing this project include Paula Josa-Jones, Jill Drew, Patricia Oris and Amy Wynn.

Community members who responded to the public invitation to be part of the movement choir have been rehearsing with Josa-Jones weekly to create the work. A movement choir is a form of community performance where people collaboratively create and perform movements, focusing on the healing, inspirational experience of moving together.

Josa-Jones, stated, “Movement, especially the shared experience of finding that movement together through improvisation and deep listening, changes and connects us in profound and unexpected ways. We are excited to share that with our community.”
