KENT—Kent News, Inc. (KNI), the publisher of The Kent Good Times Dispatch, has announced accessibility updates to its website in order to increase ease of reading of the online newspaper for readers who may have visual impairments.
A basic accessibility widget, a white stick figure on a blue background, on the right side of the website, is visible on every page.
Clicking on the widget opens up a low vision menu, allowing readers to choose from many options, including multiple options all at once. When options are selected, they turn light gray.
Once choices have been made, readers can close the menu using the X at the top left to see the changes in effect. The choices shown in the example make the font larger and sans serif, in addition to placing boxes around links, making links easier to identify.
Readers are encouraged to find the best combination of settings as needed. Future accessibility options are being explored by KNI, to include text-to-speech readers, contingent on funding and technology compatibility.
