KENT, Conn.—State Representative Maria Horn is calling for volunteers for her door knock campaign as she seeks re-election to Connecticut’s 64th District.

First elected in 2018, Horn, a Democrat, represents nine Northwest Connecticut towns. She says knocking on doors is one of the most rewarding parts of campaigning because it allows candidates to meet with a group of enthusiastic volunteers before heading out to knock doors of voters in her towns.
“Those human-to-human conversations are all-too-rare these days,” she said. “Door-knocking gives us a chance to let voters speak their minds about what’s most important to them, what they need help with, what they disagree with. We can respond with what we know and ask our own questions, creating a dialogue that is necessary to build community.”
The information gathered helps her shape her campaign’s outreach in the months to come, especially in October when volunteers work to get out the vote for the November election.
Volunteers go out in pairs after meeting up at a volunteer’s home for a short training and Q&A session. Clipboards with “turfs,” (individual maps with all the addresses of homes to reach in a particular neighborhood) and sample scripts are given out. When the canvas is complete, the group returns to the host’s home for snacks and shared stories.
