KENT, Conn.—The Parks and Recreation Commission will start a four-week pilot “Strong Foundation” group exercise class Tuesday, Aug. 4, to evaluate public interest in the program. Sessions will be held each week at the Community House at 6:45 p.m.

The program will be led by Charlene Chillious and will be open to residents and non-residents. In approving the pilot program, the commission set a maximum number of participants at 20 but no minimum. In discussing the program, members expressed concern about the cost for older residents and set fees at $60 for residents for the four-week session, $50 for resident seniors and $65 for non-residents. Drop-in fees are $20 for residents, $15 for seniors, and $25 for non-residents.

The Strong Foundations Class has exercises for mobility, strength, balance and bone health and is geared towards those of middle-age and older, specifically for perimenopause, menopause or post-menopausal women.

The commission settled on a payment of $150 per class for the instructor. Any sums received about that amount will be saved to offset future instructor costs with minimal participation. The commission will hold a special meeting the week of Aug. 18, to assess the program’s success, whether it will continue and any modification.
