KENT, Conn.—Individualism and self-reliance, resilience and perseverance, virtue, justice and ethical behavior—these are principals associated with American Stoicism, characteristics that have stood the nation in good stead.

Zeno of Citium was founder of the Stoic school of philosophy, which he taught in Athens from about 300 BC. Stoicism laid great emphasis on goodness and peace of mind gained from living a life of virtue in accordance with nature.

The Kent Memorial Library will present a free program on Stoic philosophy Thursday, June 26, at 6 p.m.

Patrick Bonis, a certified wellness counselor, teacher and coach, will provide a brief overview of the early and middle periods of Stoic philosophy, with a primary focus on the later Stoics.

The discussion will also explore select aphorisms from both Eastern and Western philosophical traditions to highlight how wisdom transcends time and cultural boundaries.
