KENT, Conn. – The Morrison Gallery will hold an opening reception Saturday, July 18, for exhibits featuring works by John Gibson and the late Chris Armstrong.
Patrons are invited to the special event from 5 to 7 p.m. at the 60 North Main St. gallery.
The exhibits will be displayed through Sunday, Aug. 30.
Gibson has spent nearly 40 years painting spheres, drawing inspiration from two distinct traditions: the detailed realism of 17th-century European still-life painting and the simplicity of Minimalist art from the 1970s and 1980s.
The artist said he continues “to paint spheres because they remain a compelling subject, offering endless opportunities to explore form, material, and careful observation.”
“Although the work can sometimes become repetitive, the challenge and satisfaction of painting the spheres keeps the subject fresh and meaningful,” he said.
The Armstrong works showcased in the exhibit are the most recent paintings before his death in 2019.
Armstrong tudied painting and art history in Florence, Italy, before receiving his BA from Bucknell University. After graduation, he received his MFA from NYU where he won the school’s MVP award and exhibited at Washington Square East Galleries. His work was recently selected for the U.S. State Department’s Art in Embassies Exhibition.
Armstrong’s waterscape paintings convey the essence of the sea. His work is described as “crossing from dark ominous blues and crashing waves to serene sunlit calm in soft tones.”
The paintings capture the graceful movement and luminosity of water, according to those who view it.

The gallery is open Wednesdays through Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays from noon to 4 p.m. Private viewings are also available by appointment.
