KENT, Conn.—Students from Kent School provided the manpower this week to plant a black gum tree on the Kent Land Trust’s field south of the village center. The field is used for both community events and the weekly farmers market.

The native tree was donated by Kent Greenhouse and Gardens to provide shade, habitat and seasonal display in years to come.

Planting natives like the black gum helps support local wildlife, and improve soil and water health.

Land trust officials thanked the Kent School students for the contributions they made to the market field by taking down the summer concert series poster, crafting the spooky witch hay bale that now greets visitors with festive fall spirit, and painting a new map box that will soon be installed on one of its kiosks.
