KENT, Conn.—Kent, like many Colonial towns in the tristate region had an early and long history with the iron industry. The Eric Sloane Museum will celebrate this saga this weekend when it presents Ironworks Weekend at the Kent Iron Works site on the museum’s grounds, 31 Kent Cornwall Road.
Programs will be presented from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, May 24 and 25. Master blacksmiths will smelt iron with a bloomery furnace using traditional methods and techniques on Saturday and forge tools from iron on Sunday. It will be only the second time that smelting has taken place at the site since the furnace, first used in 1826, was closed in 1892.
The museum, which honors the legacy of esteemed local artist Eric Sloane, will also present free tours and programs on both days.
