These shoreline accumulations are often driven by the wind, and can cause large numbers of cells to concentrate. The health district recommends that lake users avoid swimming if the water appears green or like paint spilled on the surface. It is important to not let pets swim or drink the water.

Cyanobacteria are bacteria (formerly known as blue-green algae) that can produce toxins harmful to humans and animals. The health district recommends caution until blooms dissipate, and “When in doubt, stay out.”
