KENT, Conn.—The Kent Board of Selectmen are seeking interested community members who are interested in serving as a community representative on the Region 1 Organizational Study Committee.

The Region 1 boards of education have begun an organizational study to better understand the district’s current K–8 structure, its schools and programs, and the future needs of its students and communities. The purpose of this work is to gather information, listen to the six constituent communities, and explore possibilities for providing a strong educational experience for students.
An important part of this process is ensuring that community members have a voice at the table.
Each of the six Region 1 communities is expected to have two representatives participate in the Organizational Study Committee, one appointed by the Board of Education and one appointed by the Board of Selectmen. Kent’s Board of Selectmen is seeking a community member who is interested in participating and bringing the perspective of our town to this process.
The appropriate candidate is:
•A resident of the community;
•Interested in learning more about the region and its schools;
•Willing to listen to and consider a variety of perspectives;
•Able to participate in committee meetings and related discussions; and
•Willing to bring a thoughtful, community-focused perspective to the work.
Applicants do not need to have experience in education or school governance to be considered. The selectmen are interested in hearing from community members with a variety of experiences, backgrounds and perspectives.
To express interest, submit a brief letter of interest to the Kent Board of Selectmen. The letter should include why you are interested in participating, your connection to the community, and anything else you feel would be helpful for the board to consider.
Submit letters of interest by Thursday, Nov. 12, to adminassist@townofkentct.gov. The Board of Selectmen will review the letters of interest and appoint a community representative to serve on the Organizational Study Committee by no later than Nov. 18.
At this time, no decisions are being made regarding the future structure of Region 1. The Organizational Study is an informational and fact-finding process. The goal is to gather information, engage stakeholders, hear directly from communities, and better understand the opportunities and considerations that may exist.
The board encourages any resident who is interested in learning more and contributing to this process to consider submitting a letter of interest.
Those with questions about the Organizational Study or the community representative opportunity, should contact Superintendent of Schools Melony Brady-Shanley, mbrady-shanley@region1schools.org; 860-248-1231.Â
