WINSTED—Connecticut State Northwestern will offer Emergency Medical Technician classes Monday and Wednesday evenings from 6 to 10 p.m. and Saturdays, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., starting Wednesday, Aug. 28 through Dec. 16 in the Joyner Health Science Center, 100 South Main St.
EMTs are trained to render immediate care for the sick and injured. The job is multifaceted and presents many challenges in a variety of emergency situations. EMTs work with both ambulance services and in hospital emergency room settings. The course provides a foundation for those considering careers in fire, police and security sectors, as well as for careers as physician’s assistants.
Ten hours of clinical training and eight hours of practicum experiential learning are mandatory parts of the program and are scheduled during non-classroom hours. Students also have the option to include 17 hours of real-time ambulance calls as an observer.
All students must be at least 18 years of age and have a high school diploma or equivalent. Students will need Internet access and immunizations are required for the clinical portion of the course.
The class is tuition free through a Rural Health grant, although students will have to cover the cost of books and exam fees.
