KENT, Conn.—The busy season on Kent’s streets is blossoming along with the spring flowers and the Kent Lions Club wants to ensure that everyone enjoys that season safely.

It cautions pedestrians that the best way to step off the curb with confidence doesn’t just looking both ways, it’s waving.
Give a cheerful wave to drivers before crossing. Not only does it make sure they see you, but it also adds a dash of neighborly fun to an everyday habit, club members say, a way of indicating, “Hey, you see me? Great. Thanks!”
The club offers a step-by-step guide to crossing like a pro):
Stop at the curb. Phones down, eyes up—look alive!
Look left, right and left again. Double-check for cars, bikes, or the occasional scooter.
Wave! Make eye contact with drivers and throw up a friendly wave. It’s your way of saying, “Let’s do this safely together.”
Wait for their wave back (or clear sign of stopping). That mutual nod or wave? It’s
your green light.
Walk, don’t run. Cross at a steady pace. Bonus points for smiling as you go.
“Pedestrian safety isn’t just about rules—it’s about connection,” said Lions member Karren Garrity. “A simple wave builds trust between drivers and walkers, reduces confusion, and helps everyone get home safely. Plus, it makes the world just a little friendlier.”
Garrity added, “Nothing in this town happens on its own—a special thanks to Lee Sohl for creating the illustrations, Sarah Chase for formatting the poster and for the support from the Board of Selectmen, Kent Volunteer Fire Department, State Trooper, Chamber of Commerce, Parks & Rec and C.E.R.T.”
So, the next time you’re about to cross the street, remember: Stop. Look. Wave. Walk. It’s safety with a smile.
