BRIDGEWATER, Conn.—Lihi Ben Shitrit, author of “Unrecognized: A Palestinian Bedouin Feminist in Israel,” will be the virtual speaker for the Greater Washington Coalition for Jewish Life Sunday, April 19, at 10 a.m.

Shitrit is the Henry Taub Associate Professor of Israel Studies at the Skirball Department of Hebrew and Judaic Studies at NYU University and the director of the Taub Center for Israel Studies. “Unrecognized,” her latest book, tells the extraordinary story of the first Palestinian Bedouin woman to run for office in Israel’s Negev Desert.
Forced to choose between her children and her tribe, Mona Al-Habanin transformed her personal tragedy into fierce activism. A tribute to activism, it’s a story of indigenous Bedouin feminism that defies silencing and state-sanctioned oppression.
