SHERMAN, Conn. —The Sherman Library will present a new art show, “E Pluribus Unum = DEI —Flags by Muriel Stockdale” through May 7.
The show will open Friday, April 4, from 6 to 8 p.m. with an artist’s reception at the library and on its website.
Since 2003, Stockdale has added to her series celebrating USA flags. She said the diverse people who coexist in the country inspired the project, which is titled “E Pluribus Unum (Out of Many One)—DEI (Diversity, Equity and Inclusion).”
Each piece is created using multiple materials and techniques and honors a specific culture from somewhere in the world. Gifts that people from around the world have contributed to American culture are highlighted through different materials and specific motifs.
Stockdale, born and raised in England, moved to Long Island, N.Y., in 1967. Her early career was in entertainment as a stage manager. In the 1970s, she received a federal grant to form a theater company in rural Vermont.
Over the past 40 years, while maintaining a successful career in costume design, she has directed or designed several shows in New York City and New England, performed onstage, crewed backstage, managed costume shops, designed and painted scenery, and taught aspiring designers.
Currently, her novel, “Gabriel Born,” is being produced as a podcast.
