WOODBURY, Conn.—Mom can well be glad that she doesn’t have to cook her family meal on an open hearth on Mother’s Day, a process that started with splitting wood and building a glowing fire and progressed to cooking in heavy cast iron pots hung on a spit.

The Glebe House in Woodbury will introduce visitors to the process when it offers a hands-on, open-fire cooking workshop with Frontier Mess Chuckwagon Saturday, May 10, from noon to 3 p.m.
During the workshop, participants will learn how to build and cook over a fire like a 19th-century trail cook, discover the tools of the trade and help prepare a meal and dessert right over the flames. Space limited is to18 participants.
Pre-registration is required. Tickets are $40 for museum members and $45 for non-members. Visit the website to register.
