TORRINGTON, Conn.—”Of the People, By the People, For the People” – A Movement Choir will be performed Sunday, Sept. 27, at Five Points Art Center in Torrington as part of a celebratory afternoon for the nation’s 250th anniversary.
The movement choir is a communal project led by choreographer/director Paula Josa-Jonesand aims to evoke the spirit of regeneration and community in this festive marking of the nation’s birth. A movement choir is a form of community performance where people collaboratively create and perform movements, focusing on the healing, inspirational experience of moving together.
The event is free, but guests are encouraged to RSVP. It is an outdoor performance, rain or shine (there is an indoor space if there is inclement weather), and attendees should bring lawn chairs or blankets to sit on.
The afternoon festivities also include dancing and an art station. Collaborators in developing this project include Paula Josa-Jones, Jill Drew, Patricia Oris and Amy Wynn.
Community members who responded to the public invitation to be part of the movement choir have been rehearsing with Josa-Jones regularly to create the work.
Choreographer and project director, Paula Josa-Jones, stated, “Movement, especially the shared experience of finding that movement together through improvisation and deep listening, changes and connects us in profound and unexpected ways. We are excited to share that with our community.”
Five Points Arts is a multifaceted non-profit visual arts organization committed to providing a diverse community access to world class exhibitions in downtown Torrington and fully equipped art “laboratories.” The Arts Center is located at 855 University Drive in Torrington.
