KENT, Conn.—Celeste Trabucco, a senior at Housatonic Valley Regional High School, is trying to give back to her community as part of her capstone project at the school. She plans to create a “sensory table” for students at Kent Center School.
A sensory table is an educational tool, typically a basin or table, designed for hands-on exploration of physical materials that encourage sensory play. The tables offer children contained spaces to engage their senses, foster creativity and to develop problem-solving and fine motor skills.
In pursuing capstone projects, an independent project of personal interest to the student, high school students showcase the knowledge and skills they have gained throughout their academic program and apply them to real-world problems and issues.
“I decided to design and build a sensory table for my Capstone project,” Trabucco wrote. “I wanted to give back to my community and make a positive impact, which is why the table will be donated to and installed at Kent Center School. My goal is to create a safe and stimulating calming station for younger grade students to use.”
She has launched a GoFundMe page to help purchase the materials needed for the project. She is seeking $600 for such things as rice, scoopers, a keyboard, marbles, bells, craft pompoms, Velcro, sand and appropriate toys, wood, glue, sandpaper and plastic bins.
Shortly after posting, she had already received $190 in pledges.
