KENT, Conn.— Kent Historical Society trustee Debbie Shiflett-Fitton will demonstrate spinning wool Saturday, Sept. 5, 1 to 2:30 p.m., exploring the ancient craft of turning raw wool fibers into continuous, usable yarn by drafting (stretching) and twisting them together.
It is a highly meditative and creative process, allowing control of the thickness, color and texture of one’s own unique yarn for knitting, crocheting or weaving. This act is at the heart of the historical society’s summer exhibit, “Homespun Kent: Revolutionary Households.” It was a metaphoric symbol of independence: making the yarn for the fabric the nation.
This demonstration is part of society’’s Homespun Makers’ Series and is free for members. A $25 donation is suggested for non-members. RSVP to director@
