NEW MILFORD, Conn.—In keeping with Merryall’s 75th anniversary theme—”Do something!”—the Merryall Center presents “Songs of Protest” on Saturday, Aug. 15.
Since our nation’s founding, Americans have demanded and defended the right to freedom of expression. Whether writing tracts for publication, carrying placards at political rallies or in demonstrations, through marches peaceful and sometimes not, America embraces spirited debate.
Protest music has been part of our debates from the start. From lyrics overlaid on songs that originated in Europe, to catalogs of music that inspired a generation’s demand for change, to single anthems that transcend their origins to unite people in hope, protest songs have galvanized people to action in pursuit of something better.
“Songs of Protest” includes opening remarks by Nadine Strossen, international expert on first amendment rights. This will be followed by an evening of songs addressing patriotism, economic justice, anti-war sentiments, immigration and hope.
The selection spans more than 200 years from the Revolutionary War to the Reagan Revolution and more. Produced by Missy Alexander, the cast of performers includes favorite local musicians George Potts, Felicia Michael, Bob Brophy, George Mallas, Susanna Marker, Caroline Sadler Bennett, Nancy Walsh, Bill Petkanas, Chuck Cundari, Nancy Janutolo and Nick Petrone.
