KENT, Conn.—The Great Hollow Juried Art Show opened Friday, May 17, and continued through the weekend, with more than 300 art and nature lovers coming to view 165 paintings and photographs that celebrate the area’s natural environment.

Fifty-nine artists exhibited. Winners were announced and prizes given at the opening.   

Sponsored by the Great Hollow Photographers Club, the show was the ninth annual fundraiser for Great Hollow Nature Preserve.   

The works can be viewed on the Sherman Artists website through June 30 and purchased online to support Great Hollow.

The winners for paintings are: B. Forrest Shepherd (first place, “Kestrel Hawk,” oil), Bonnie Johnson (second place, “Squantz Pond Shore,” acrylic), and Christine Maschke (third place, “Into the Woods,” pastel).

Honorable Mentions for paintings were: Christy Bonaiuto, “Fireworks on the Hill,” acrylic; Denise Cassano, “Winter Awaits,” oil; Betsy Duckworth, “Lattice Wings Still Fly,” mixed media; Beth Levine, “Seasonal Whispers,” mixed media; and Virginia Schaffer, “Magic,” watercolor.

The winners for photographs are:  Susan Locke (first place, “Moose By the Barn”), Karen Golden (second place, “Tracked”), and Dave King (third place,“Majestic Bald Eagle”).

Honorable Mentions for photographs went to John Clery, “Coyote Cozy Refuge;” John Foley, “Transcendence;” Jeff Ginsburg, “Uneasy is the Bearer of the Crimson;” Dena Mitchell, “Great Horned Owlets;” and Jim Sanders, “Kaaterskill Falls.”

The works were judged by Kelly Edwards for painting and Jane Haslam for photography. 

All artwork is or sale and a portion of the sales support Great Hollow Nature Preserve’s mission of environmental education, research and conservation.
