KENT, Conn.—Electronic vehicle (EV) drivers will be excited to know that the Town of Kent has a public EV charger available and operational at Kent Town Hall.

This is a major accomplishment that took more than 18 months to get through the process, according to Lynn Mellis Worthington, selectman and chairman of the town’s Sustainability Team.

“It was a joint effort started by myself, representing the Kent Sustainability Team and finished by [First Selectman] Eric Epstein. Public Works Director Rick Osborne was also part of the process that led to the successful completion,” she said.

The charger was installed through an agreement with Voltpost, which received a total of $1.32 million from Eversource, UI, Connecticut Clean Cities and the Connecticut Innovative Energy Solutions program. Kent is one of 60 locations in Connecticut that is receiving an EV charger through the grant program.

Users must download the Voltpost app in order to activate the charger and pay for the electrical charge. It costs about 75 cents per hour to charge a car.

The location is the same where a previous EV charger was located, just south of the building. The town had previously installed a charger in 2015 through a grant from the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP). However, that charger no longer worked after years of usage.
