KENT, Conn.—Muriel Stockdale will present an artist talk on her E Pluribus project, highlighting her latest addition, “OM1 (Out of Many, One),” Saturday, Jan. 10 at 2 p.m.
The talk will be followed by a reception at the KAA gallery located at 21 South Main St.
A display of her flags will be on view at the gallery on Saturday, Jan. 10, and Sunday, Jan. 11, from 1 to 4 p.m. each day.
This flag was built with the participation of almost 1,000 people to celebrate and honor the 250th anniversary of the United States of America. Stockdale considers the flag project her “proxy action” to restitch the untied States of America.
“Proxy action is something we can physically do with the consciousness of solving an otherwise intractable or ephemeral problem,” she said. “I came up with the term while weeding my garden when I noticed that I felt like I was weeding my brain, so I kept weeding. This project is my small contribution to promote awareness of our diverse gifts as humans not just American culture.”
This flag is part of Stockdale’s ongoing series of USA art flags built to celebrate the diversity of the communities living together here in the United States of America.
As an immigrant, Stockdale said she is awed by the harmonious co-existence of Americans who celebrate their freedom in all possible ways.
The artist related that her series of surprising U.S. flags invite viewers to consider a broader look at what patriotism is now and can be in the future. She noted every hand represents a story, a culture, a voice in the American chorus.
Beside the flag, Stockdale keeps a book cataloging the hands, creating a living archive of the people who shape our nation. Those who stopped by to share their hand tracing, name and cultural history, will be able to see the result of their participation.
The KAA gallery is open Thursdays through Saturdays from 1 to 5 p.m. and Sundays from noon to 4 p.m.
