KENT, Conn.—The natural world may be taking a well-earned rest for the winter, but the Northwest Connecticut Land Conservancy (NCLC) is active and focused on continuing its mission of safeguarding natural and working lands, public recreation areas and drinking water resources during the fallow months.
The NCLC, headquartered in Kent, is the largest land trust in Connecticut, protecting 14,200 acres including 31 public hiking preserves, 49 working farms, 57 miles of rivers and streams and more than 3,000 acres of habitat for rare and endangered species. It will hold two events in December, both free and open to the public.
The first, “Meet Your Greens” will be held at the Litchfield Distillery, 569 Bantam Rd. in Litchfield, on Thursday, Dec. 4, 5 to 7 p.m.Co-hosted by Northwest Connecticut Land Conservancy, Litchfield Land Trust, Morris Land Trust, Ripley Waterfowl Conservancy, Rivers Alliance of Connecticut, Warren Land Trust, and White Memorial Conservation Center, this informal gathering offers an opportunity to connect with others working or volunteering in the conservation field.

On Saturday, Dec. 6, from 3 to 4 p.m. the NCLC will hold a Luminara Walk at the Mallory Preserve, 15 Route 39 North in Sherman. The group will meet at dusk and walk a trail lit by luminara, inviting them to take in the preserve in a whole new light. Enjoy a cup of cocoa, the peace of nature, and the company of others at this special seasonal event.
Admission is free but registration is required. Participants should wear warm layers and sturdy shoes and bring a flashlight or headlamp for backup.
