KENT, Conn. — Peggy Mercury is more than an apothecary and accessories shop.
It is a destination for those looking for unique discussion, presentations, and exhibits that explore a variety of topics, including fashion, makeup, art, and more.
This coming weekend, Saturday and Sunday, May 17-18, Peggy Mercury at 9 Maple St., Unit will offer two special programs.
The store is located in the Kent Barns shopping complex, where a variety of shops, galleries, eateries, and businesses are situated.
Vintage couture jewelry pop up
A vintage couture jewelry pop-up event with Susie Holmes will kick off with a reception Friday, May 16, from 5 to 7 p.m.
Described by co-owners James Boehmer and Greg Fricke as a “baubles and bubbles” event, the pop up will run through May 18.
Holmes’ collection statement making accessories spans decades and includes coveted items from Chanel, Dior, Yves Saint Laurent, Kenneth Jay Lane, amongst other beloved designers.

‘Embellished Notifications’
The works of Kate Lewis, textile designer and fiber artist, will be showcased at Peggy Mercury Saturday, May 17, through Sunday, June 22.
A conversation with Lewis and curator, cultural journalist, and podcast host Emily McElwreath will be held at the store Saturday from 4 to 7 p.m. to kick off the show.
The artist describes the series of pieces in the show as conceived as an “antidote to the news,” with a focus on capturing the positive feelings and joy the digital images offer.
“I thought about the relationship our phones have with brands, how we receive information digitally and which brands and phrases exactly gave me that hit of dopamine,” Lewis said. “These notifications have become integral to our modern lives, with food deliveries, take out, online dating, transport…”
The art has a “nod to traditional cross-stitch samplers” and are colorful handmade works, according to the store’s owners.
The pieces “are a satirical fusion of modern, technological communications with hand-made practice,” the artist said of her work.
