Born near and raised in Bantam, Conn., Gavell was the son of the late Alice (Burke) and Francis Gavell. A gifted athlete, he earned numerous accolades in soccer, basketball, and track and field before going on to study Spanish at the University of Bridgeport.

Following his studies, he joined the U.S. Army and graduated at the top of his class from the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center in Monterey, Calif., specializing in Korean. His military service took him to South Korea, Colorado, and Arizona.

After returning to Connecticut, he began a 22-year career with the State Police, serving as the Resident State Trooper in North Canaan, Kent, and Washington. Though he retired in 2002, his passion for investigative work endured. He went on to continue his career as an insurance investigator with The Hartford and Zurich Insurance.

Along the way, Gavell touched countless lives and gathered a lifetime of stories through his work and his commitment to helping others.

He is survived by his loving wife, Karen Gavell, four children, three grandchildren, faithful “Poodle,” remaining siblings, and many friends. He was predeceased by a sister, Leona.

Services were held April 21 at Thurston Rowe Funeral Home in Litchfield.
